Coach Dean played Division One hockey as a defenseman at Providence College and then spent three years playing professionally in the ECHL and CHL. His playing career began in northern New Jersey, where he grew up and eventually lead him to the Northwood School in Lake Placid, New York. After three years playing prep school hockey, Leigh played a year of junior hockey in Cornwall, Ontario for the Cornwall Colts before heading off to Providence and Hockey East.
After experiencing and learning what minor professional hockey had to offer he decided to end his playing career and began coaching in his home state with the North Jersey Avalanche. While with the Avalanche, Leigh was a part of the '92 Avalanche staff that captured a National title in 2005. As a full time member of the coaching staff Leigh oversaw all aspects of player development from mites to junior age athletes. In addition to coaching, his responsibilities also included supervising various in house league operations as well as day to day programs of the hockey department and facility.
Upon moving to Massachusetts, Leigh began working for fellow Providence alumni and NHL Professional Jeff Serowik at his Pro Ambitions Hockey Schools. While travelling with the hockey school Leigh was relied upon to direct the day and boarding camps in addition to the weekly skill sessions all over New England.
Currently, Leigh is the head coach of the 98 Islander Elite team as well as an assistant for the 02 Islander Elite team. He has a tremendous love for the game and does his best to share that passion every time he is on the ice with his players. Leigh believes strongly in the development of young athletes and giving them a chance to have a rewarding experience when it relates to the game of hockey. As a coach he is continuously looking to improve his own teaching methods in order to benefit the players and help them realize their potential as players and as people.
His new role within the organization is something that he accepts with great pride. He understands the challenges that young athletes face and hopes to help more easily facilitate their growth through the Middlesex Islander organization. |
