Walsh and Dean to Head U16 Program

Huskies/Islanders Combine to Form Elite Team

The Middlesex Islanders/New England Junior Huskies are pleased to announce the formation of a U-16 team for the 2012-13 season to participate in the new Eastern Junior Hockey League 16-and-under league.  The program, which will consist of full-season teams, will be the first of its kind in the Northeast, allowing for greater development and less travel, resulting in a smaller number of school days missed.  The new league will follow the High Performance Club Criteria developed by USA Hockey in accordance with the American Development Model.

The team will be coached by Sean Walsh and Leigh Dean.   Sean Walsh is currently an Assistant Coach with UMass-Boston in the ECAC East Division.  He is heavily involved with USA Hockey National Festivals.  Walsh previously coached at Lawrence University.

Leigh Dean is currently the Director of Hockey Operations for the Islanders Youth Hockey programs.  He played hockey at Providence College and then spent three years playing professionally in the ECHL and CHL.

“This is going to be a great opportunity for elite players to continue to develop through an age that is normally void of strong hockey teams.  We are extremely excited to have two top teachers coach this team,” commented Director of Hockey Operations Paul Jenkins.

The team will have its own dedicated locker room at Hockey East’s Merrimack College, practice twice per week and play a full 40 game schedule.  The team will play in top showcase tournaments in addition to the EJHL affiliates.

Recruiting has begun and interested players may contact the club at info@jrhuskies.com or leighdean@iyho.org or by calling 508-561-7657.

2001 Elite Champions at the Philadelphia Super Series

The Islanders had a tough start to the tournament, losing their first two games to Team Comcast and the Young Nationals.  They returned with a strong performance on Saturday and earned wins over the Jr. Penguins and Valley Jr. Warriors and moved into 2nd place with a victory over the Colorado Evolution on Sunday morning. Sunday afternoon's final game put the Islanders against the 1st place Toronto Young Nationals where the boy's strong play continued in an exciting and tight game. With the game tied in the last moments of the 3rd period the boys were able to score the winning goal with only ten seconds left avoiding overtime and claiming a 5-4 victory over Toronto. After going 4-2-0 in the tournament the Middlesex Islanders were crowned Champions of the Philadelphia Super Series.

The coaches, players and parents of the 2001 Elite team would like to thank Team Comcast and the Super Series organizers for hosting the tournament.

IYHO's Philosophy

The Islander Organization exists to allow young people the opportunity to participate in a competitive league, to allow the players to be involved in an environment that focuses on skill development and team-based responsibilities with the intention of developing within the players a life long love for the game. Our goal is to develop all players on an equal basis based on teaching the game from different perspectives- individual offense and defense, team-based offense and defense and most importantly how players should win or lose with dignity and humility.

In either case, the opportunity to experience and develop " lessons in life " will be in the forefront of our coaches minds.
